PII launches project to train Palestinians
The charitable organisation Palestine International Institute (PII) will present a groundbreaking new training project to a group of over 350 business leaders and influencers in Dubai.
PII's Project for Developing Palestinian Skills (PDPS) will be unveiled to a packed audience at an event at the Habtoor Grand Hotel on Wednesday May 11, 2011, as the organisation draws support from the UAE's professional community to train impoverished Palestinians in useful skills, such as medicine, engineering, IT, arts, science and other professions.
PII's founder and executive chairman, Dr As'ad Abdul Rahman, explained the project: "PDPS was the collective idea of me and several other members of the rapidly growing PII organisation. The group was established to devise ways and means to help the Palestinian people, many of whom live under very difficult conditions. We hope to teach them the skills to lead more useful, fulfilling and happier lives and prevent them from being seduced into leaving their own country for opportunities abroad.
"Our main donators are PII members and supporters from across the Arab world who believe it's vital to help Palestinians remain in their own country and develop their skills, giving them the tools to help their compatriots.
"We've already had a number of expatriated Palestinians from communities throughout the world joining this positive movement, offering PII their time and effort to support our project. As many as 20 professional from some developed countries across Europe and the Middle East have taken part in the project so far. The numbers vary across countries, but the interest has been incredible so far, with Germany and Austrian Palestinian communities being particularly supportive.
"Medical doctors, graduates and other professionals from all over the world have already volunteered to take part in programme with many Palestinians already benefiting from the experience - however the numbers could be much higher if we receive more funding.
"People can help this project by donating or helping collect funds needed to help PII provide the travelling and living expenses required for the professionals who are eligible for the scholarships PII offer.
"We've many applicants eligible and many companies, hospitals and colleges around the world who are providing us with partial scholarships, but we lack the money to cover the travelling and living expenses to cope with demand.
"In a nutshell, there are a huge number of offers to train Palestinians, and vast quantities of Palestinians willing to develop their knowledge and skills, yet there's limited money to meet all these needs.
"At the very outset, the founders of PII decided to focus on drawing membership from two categories of people - 'businessmen' who were also well educated with intellectual capabilities as well as 'scientists' - who have expertise in the institute's strategy and goals."
Dr Abdul Rahman adds: "On a personal level, the vision and mission of PII has been a long term dream which is now a reality, as the first and only Palestinian non-government organisation to specialise in gathering academic and scientific information about communities of Palestinian diaspora.
"Since 2002 PII set the aim for its projects to establish a two-way link of interaction between our communities abroad and Palestine as a cause, a homeland and future independent state. PII also aspires to establish solid bridges between these communities to empower Palestinians in the west to join our efforts and make a real difference."
Over 350 multinational guests will attend the Palestine International Institute (PII) evening at Grand Habtoor Beach Terrace on Wednesday 11th May, 2011, which begins at 7.30pm with tickets still available at the door. Those who are interested in joining PII can apply through the website or write to the Executive Chairman at pii@orange.jo
